Some stones are pretty. Maligano jasper is a statement.
The first time I saw it, I understood immediately why people collect it. The patterns are bold and graphic — sweeping areas of black and gray cut through with bursts of warm orange, like an abstract painting that nature made over millions of years. No two pieces are alike, and that's not just a saying with Maligano jasper. It's genuinely true.
About the Stone
Maligano jasper comes from the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, where it forms in ancient volcanic rock. The dramatic black, gray, and orange patterning is the result of silica-rich fluids filling cracks and voids in the rock over time — each layer building up to create those bold, graphic designs.
It's an opaque stone with a smooth, polished surface that really lets the patterns shine. In person, the contrast between the dark tones and the warm orange is even more striking than in photos.
Why Sterling Silver?
For this pendant, sterling silver was the natural choice. The bright, cool shine of the silver wire plays beautifully against the warm orange tones in the stone — it creates contrast without competing. The dark areas of the jasper make the silver pop, and the orange makes the whole piece feel warm and alive.
It's one of those combinations where the wire and the stone just belong together.
The Pendant
My Maligano Jasper Sterling Silver Pendant is handcrafted using my wire wrapping technique — no glue, no solder, just wire shaped and woven by hand around the stone.
One of my favorite details on this piece is the gallery wire I used along the frame. Gallery wire has a decorative cut-out pattern — on this pendant, it's a delicate row of hearts that runs along the edge of the setting. It's the kind of detail you might not notice at first glance, but once you see it, you can't unsee it. It adds a romantic, handcrafted quality that sets this piece apart from anything mass-produced.
I also finished the bail with a sterling silver bead — a small but intentional touch that gives the top of the pendant a polished, complete look.
I also want to be honest about something: this is a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted piece, and it's not meant to look perfect. The slight variations in the wire, the organic way the wrapping follows the shape of the stone — that's not a flaw. That's the point. Handmade means made by human hands, and I think that's something worth celebrating. If you're looking for machine-made precision, this isn't it. If you're looking for something with soul, you're in the right place.
The stone in the listing is the exact stone you receive. What you see is what you get — and what you get is something truly special.
How to Wear It
The bold black, gray, and orange of Maligano jasper makes it a natural statement piece. Keep everything else simple — a plain black top, a white shirt, a neutral sweater — and let the pendant do the talking.
It's also a great conversation starter. People will ask about it.
